i am thinking of starting to grow plants inside my house and was wondering if i really needed a big powerful 400-600 watt light i was wondering if i could use an old light from a fish tank suspended above the plant would work well also would a flourecent light for a fish tank that was meant to benefit aquatic plants be better for growing normal plants?

I want to try start growing plants indoors, and wondering what kind of light would be best suited to aid the growing process? If anybody can post some links as well would be greatly appreciated! I would like to try and build my own grow lamp, and need to know light frequency, and how high above the soil/plants and such things I would need. Would like to try grow different fruits, herbs, and trees. Thank you.
